Sector Rotation Heats Up as Healthcare, Utilities, and Industrials Gain Strength

Hughes Optioneering Team Update July 3, 2026

The market is pushing ahead with a major changing of the guard as the rally aggressively broadens out. In the final session of the week, this shift was on full display with 8 of the 11 S&P sectors closing in the green, spearheaded by defensive leadership in Healthcare and Utilities. This clear pivot away from high-beta momentum shatters the old belief that “so goes the Magnificent Seven, so goes the market.” Even with nearly all of the Mag7 tech giants down significantly from their peaks or sitting in individual bear markets, the S&P 500 remains up nearly 9% year-to-date. This internal rotation is keeping the broader bull market incredibly healthy, reinforced by the fact that more than 65% of S&P constituents are holding above both their 50-day and 200-day moving averages.

Under the surface, we are witnessing an intense high-beta momentum unwind and single-stock derisking. Even though the headline index volatility remains exceptionally tame, single-stock volatility is absolutely rampant as investors dump the previous winners. It is almost as if the apparent resolution of the Iran conflict has cleared the runway to return directly to the broad-market, non-AI trade that dominated early Q1. With tech facing persistent liquidation, our focus is entirely trained on the pockets showing dominant relative strength: Financials, Industrials, Healthcare, and a powerful surge in Mid-caps and Small-caps. These sectors have built clean breakout structures and are primed to lead as this broadening trade rekindles.

With the Fourth of July shortening the trading week, it is the perfect time to step away from the charts and recharge. Looking ahead, we still have a multi-week buffer before Q2 earnings season begins. Without earnings results to drive the narrative, price action will be highly beholden to market technicals, headline risks, and upcoming economic reports. These macro data drops will likely be the main drivers of volatility over the next few weeks, so we will remain nimble and let the price action dictate our entry points. Have a great holiday and enjoy the break!
