Market Rally Holds, But Cracks Are Showing Beneath the Surface

The primary trend for the broader equity market remains decidedly bullish, with the S&P 500 maintaining a comfortable cushion above its major long-term trendlines and approaching record highs this week, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq reached brand-new record territory behind strength in mega-cap leaders. Intermediate-term price action also perked up through mid-week: the S&P 500 successfully recaptured both its key 7600 floor and its 50-day moving average after temporarily slipping below them last week. Validating this support zone was a critical technical win, and holding above it will be vital in the sessions ahead. That said, the market remains trapped in a defined trading channel. Despite Monday’s aggressive surge toward the recent highs, selling interest re-emerged as the index approached 7800 overhead resistance. Expect the benchmark to continue consolidating within this 7600–7800 corridor until Q3 earnings season offers the fundamental spark needed to force a breakout.

Beneath the headline indexes, internal market metrics tell a much more fragile story. Participation has thinned dramatically: the broad-market expansion that characterized earlier legs of this rally has completely stalled out, the S&P 500 Advance-Decline line is setting lower lows, the Equal Weight S&P 500 remains in a clear breakdown phase, and net new lows are substantially outpacing new highs. The headline index has managed to mask this severe internal momentum unwinding almost entirely through concentrated capital inflows into heavy-cap Semiconductors and Mega-Cap Technology. While relying on such a narrow cohort of market leaders is far from ideal, historical precedent demonstrates that the market can comfortably keep itself afloat for extended periods as long as mega-cap tech maintains its structural bid.

This internal divergence is a direct consequence of a punishing macro backdrop, headlined by an historic surge in bond market yields that saw the U.S. 10-Year Treasury rate rocket to its highest level in nearly two decades. The sheer velocity of this yield advance—paired with sticky inflation prints, persistent energy market friction stemming from global geopolitical conflicts, and an increasingly hawkish Federal Reserve—presents a high hurdle for risk assets. Until Treasury yields stabilize, index-level upside will likely remain constrained, reinforcing the flight to quality into mega-cap balance sheets. Within this environment, our highest-conviction tactical exposure remains focused on select Technology and Energy plays, alongside targeted short setups in rate-sensitive sectors that remain vulnerable to elevated yields
