Market Rotation Broadens as Financials, Small-Caps, and Select Tech Lead
Optioneering Team Update July 17, 2026
The market’s heavy rotation is still in full swing as investors continue to aggressively lock in profits on the first-half’s high-flying AI semiconductors and hardware names. While these massive winners go through a well-deserved digestion period, this capital is not leaving the market—it’s simply finding a new home.
In a massive divergence, the VIX is staying remarkably quiet near 18, yet single-stock volatility has spiked to its highest level in almost two years. This is the direct result of money violently churning under the surface, which has successfully allowed this bull market to broaden out. Lagging areas are beautifully picking up the slack, and our underlying market internals are incredibly strong, with roughly 68% of S&P 500 components holding firm in confirmed long-term uptrends.
While the semi trade takes a back seat to consolidate, we are focusing our highest conviction on Financials, Small-caps, and Mid-caps, alongside cybersecurity. Additionally, a clear new beneficiary of this rotation over the last few weeks is a select group of mega-cap tech giants: specifically AAPL, AMZN, and META. All three have surged sharply off their respective lows as fresh institutional money rotates in, and they look to have plenty of room to run.
On the financial side, we feel even better about our bullish thesis now that Q2 bank earnings are rolling in and proving that the entire sector is absolutely on fire. Two new standout areas we are watching closely are Healthcare and Biotech; both are flashing strong relative strength and breaking out as primary beneficiaries of this defensive shift.
As for the S&P 500 itself, we remain highly constructive and bullish on the headline index. Despite the equal-weight index leading the charge of late, the S&P 500’s trend structure is perfectly aligned, and all of our primary trendline buy signals are completely intact.
Looking at the charts, the index has repeatedly hammered against stubborn overhead resistance around 7575 since early June. Crucially, however, it has been carving out a beautiful series of higher lows during this consolidation. This tells us buyers are aggressively stepping in at higher levels each time. As these higher lows converge with overhead resistance, we expect a major breakout, with strong Q2 earnings serving as the ultimate fundamental catalyst to pierce 7575 and catapult the headline index to fresh all-time highs.
